February 24, 2010 -- A 32-year-old man, Bruco Strong Eagle Eastwood, who had a long criminal history, went to Deer Creek Middle School with a hunting rifle and opened fire on random students and faculty in the parking lot. Math teacher Dr. David Benke and bus driver Steve Potter tackled and pinned the shooter, stopping him hurting more people. No one was killed. Eastwood had attended school at Deer Creek but had not been a student there for many, many years; he hadn't had contact with anyone there either. Deer Creek Middle School is less than 3 miles away from Columbine High School.

April 20, 2010 --

May 8, 2010 -- For the second time in 3 years, Christopher Franko, 17, was stopped in the act of trying to copycat the Columbine shootings at his former high school, Connetquot High School. He's accused of conspiring with Dana Saltzman, a 16 year old girl, whom he met at a special education school after leaving Connetquot. They plotted to kill the security guards outside the school building. They would then enter the school where they would shoot as many students as they could. When police arrived they planned to shoot it out with them before committing suicide a la Eric and Dylan.

The pair tried previously to a shotgun at a sporting goods store but neither was 18 at the time so they were refused. Franko intended to return on his birthday (June 8) to buy the weapon. The shooting was set for June 10, the day Franko's ex-classmates would graduate. Since the first threat he posed to the school, officials kept him on their proverbial radar and were tipped off by Franko's social worker. Franko was held without bail until his June 8 court date (ironically the same day as his 18th birthday) and was barred from contacting anyone associated with his former school. He would later be sentenced to 3-9 years in prison. Saltzman was released without bail with a court date set for June 17.
